Panel: Digital Infrastructure – “Moonshot” to Transform Transportation

Wednesday, November 16: 1:55 PM – 2:30 PM PST  

The US federal government has launched a $750B plan to both rebuild and further develop the nation’s physical transportation infrastructure. To optimize that massive investment and pave the way for decades of mobility innovation, USDOT is now developing a comprehensive plan to establish a reference model for “digital transportation infrastructure,” establishing definitions and standard interfaces for the components required to realize this vision. Much like in the 70’s, where the technology industry coalesced around a reference model for networking that led to the Internet of today, the federal government, working with states and cities, is creating the building blocks to catalyze the same opportunity in transportation. Over the last three years, cities through the Open Mobility Foundation, have taken the lead on basic elements of the system with the development of APIs such as MDS and CDS. This work must now be integrated into a comprehensive, cohesive, national architecture that will unleash the same opportunities in transportation that the Internet did for the world.

Panel: Regional Evolution – From Sprawl to the 15-Minute City

Placing almost everything a city-dweller could need within a 15-minute walk or bike ride is an increasingly important  strategy in the pursuit of more sustainable, equitable, and healthier urban environments. Unfortunately, transitioning sprawling, car-centric megaregions to more compact ‘15-minute’ communities is no easy task. What changes in land use policies should be implemented to create the necessary diversity of housing, jobs, and services? How can technology increase access to opportunities beyond the 15 minute radius, whether it’s last-mile delivery services providing goods to those who don’t have their own cars, or technologies that enable remote work?

The data revolution has allowed cities to analyze mobility challenges and program for more responsiveness, safety and sustainability. How are citizens navigating this new hyper-connected and data-driven world?
