Project Summary
The City of San José’s SMART grant project uses technology to develop a strategic and equitable approach to managing Downtown’s limited curb spaces. This project helps the City meet the competing and growing demands for various curb uses. The project involves collection of both curb inventory and curb utilization data to understand and catalog existing curb uses in downtown. It also provides real-time curb use information. With the help of their technology vendor, UMOJO, and by using CDS, the City will create three separate APIs to measure and communicate about curb usage. These APIs will work in tandem with smart infrastructure components such as curb cameras and sensors

Quotes
“One of the goals of the project is to digitize the curb, and test hardware technology to capture and analyze curb utilization, enabling us to frame new initiatives and policies that are data-driven. We are excited about the ways this pilot will allow us to implement effective strategies to make the curb safer, more accessible, and more flexible for our downtown communities.”
Elias Khoury, On-street Parking Manager for the San José Department of Transportation
“Collaborating with other cities facing similar curbside challenges has taught us far more than we could have learned on our own. The information sharing during this process has been invaluable.”
Sarah Abroff, Local Policy Lead for the San José Department of Transportation
